White Stucco Walls
03:39
|
|||
I’ve been out calling, calling your name,
But you won’t be here long to call back again
Call back again
With no expectations, not waiting for pain
Pitcher of clean water comes down in the rain
Comes down with the rain
When your soul has departed, moving up past our heads
If Jesus would meet you with the souls that you fed
I’ve been to Fargo, I’ve been to the falls,
But they’re not familiar like white stucco walls
That farmhouse sits empty, like a ghost on the plain
A windsock still tied to a line with a chain
To a line with a chain
Those hands were once strong, now hands that are weak
I’ll listen so closely to the words that you speak
Speak again

Death Special (Ludlow)
01:58
|
|||
Ludlow, Ludlow
I drove miles down to Ludlow
As I drove through the Springs
There was nothing to see
Except Colorado iron and coal
Death comes rolling in a train car
Heard from Rockefeller
Bury them folks in that cellar
The Special cuts ya down hard
Now there’s just a statue
And it cries as it looks at you
That cellar door don’t open no more
But the iron and coal still flow
Ludlow, Ludlow
I drove miles down to Ludlow
As I drove through the springs
There was something to see
I set fire to that iron and coal

Hell Departed
02:56
|
|||
Mr Sheriff, something’s wrong
Inn on the plains ain’t been dark too long
left just a hymnal of old timey song
Might be the answer we need all along
We found a body, stripped for all that it’s worth
Out in the garden, just covered with earth
No sign of the family, they must have skipped town
The land has been tilled and we’re gonna look down
Did it for the money
Did it for the fun
They did it for the bloodlust
And now they’re on the run
Grave dug so shallow
His heels still show
They’ve beat out the law
And the coming snow
Elvira and Kate fled 'cross the plains
We don't know their faces but we sure know their names
They're the ghosts of the prairie, forever to stay
If hell departed they were, then no one's to say
Made it to the trainyard, But they didn’t see the bull
There’s little in the cabin, just a wagon-full
We’ll open up the cellar, don’t know what we’ll find
We’ll be moving quickly, they can’t escape from time

Hello Mrs Johnson, you self righteous woman
Sunday school teacher, what brings you out slummin'
Do you reckon the preacher would approve where you are
Standin' here, visitin' with a back-slidin' Christian in a neighborhood bar
Well, yes, that's my bottle and yes, that's my glass
And I see you're eyeballin', this pretty young lass
It ain't none of your business but yes, she's with me
And we don't need no sermon, you self-righteous woman just let us be
The Lord knows we're drinkin' and runnin' around
And He don't need your loud mouth informin' the town
The Lord knows we're sinnin' and sinnin' ain't right
But me and the good Lord's gonna have us a good talk later tonight
Goodbye, Mrs.Johnson, you self-righteous biddy
We don't need your preachin' and we don't need your pity
So, go back to whatever, you hypocrites do
And when I talk to Heaven, be nice and I'll put in a good word for you

Outlaw in Antonito
02:02
|
|||
A man came into Antonito town
Or so my granddad told
He came with iron on his hip
And evil in his soul
I Didn’t think things like that happened still
Circa 1945
But the marshall came striding down
That man was fixin to die
John Wes Hardin he was not
Perhaps the two’ve now met
On the stoop of my granddad’s store
Latter-day outlaw’s dead
Old Man Eagan said to go lock the door
And not come out till he calls
He wasn’t gonna witness death that day
He heard a shot and a fall
He’s a relic of an older time
His story’s all mine

Powder & Lead
03:12
|
|||
Spread out ‘cross the Kansas grass
Bluecoat gang is a-moving fast
Can’t trust a thing that Chivington’s said
‘Cause he won’t rest till your last is dead
Place your people at the bend of the creek
And for one final time lay down to sleep
The beat of the horses comes at rise of the sun
And not much later come the thunder of guns
[Chorus]
Run fast now boy, go tell your men
To protect your family from Chivington
If he finds you out, you’re all dead
He says the only cure for you is powder and lead
The people gather under the stars and stripes
And run up another flag the color of white
just a peaceful group, no braves abound
And they prayed they would turn the charge around
The slaughter would come now, won’t be long
They began to shed tears with the old death song
The savages murder and Black Kettle weeps,
The water runs red in the sandy creek

"O bury me not on the lone prairie."
These words came low and mournfully
From the pallid lips of the youth who lay
On his dying bed at the close of day.
"O bury me not..." And his voice failed there.
But they took no heed to his dying prayer.
In a narrow grave, just six by three
They buried him there on the lone prairie.
And the cowboys now as they roam the plain,
For they marked the spot where his bones were lain,
Fling a handful o' roses o'er his grave
With a prayer to God his soul to save.

I'll Die in Colorado
03:42
|
|||
My home’s not in Glory
And my home’s not in hell
I’ve lived in the Rockies
And I’ll die there as well
The Golden gate canyon
Centennial plains
Home of all of my pleasures
And all of my pains
I’ll lay down in the street
I’ll lay down in the snow
In the middle of Colfax
‘Cause it’s my time to go
The place of my father
And his folks before him
The Arkansas valley
Bury me next to them
Thin air in my lungs
Knee deep in the snow
I’ll die in Colorado
come my time to go
